Once again, I've had to think about whether to publish a note about this release, but this is a blog specializing in Ubuntu and we won't let it pass. The fact is, it's already available. dubuntu 25.10, and after a few years of major changes, including a new logo and color palette, the official flavor for education is now mature enough to not require major tweaks.
Because you have to understand what Edubuntu is: Ubuntu with education in mind. In the past, I wondered if it made sense for it to exist, but it's hard to imagine teachers installing Ubuntu first and then the metapackages with school applications. In any case, it exists, and it's updated every six months, although the list of new features isn't very extensive or impressive.
Most notable new features of Edubuntu 25.10
Like the rest of Quokkas, especially the main edition, Edubuntu 25.10 is based on the following:
- Supported for 9 months, until July 2026.
- Linux 6.17.
- sudo is now sudo-rs, a default implementation of Rust. The traditional version remains available for compatibility.
- Libre Office 25.8.
- Packages updated to newer versions, including:
- GCC 15.2.
- glibc 2.42.
- Binutils 2.45.
- LLVM 20.
- Rust 1.85.
- Go 1.24.
- Open JDK 25.
- Python 3.13.7.
- Open SSL 3.5.
- Table 25.2.
- APT 3.1.
- systemd 257.9.
- PipeWire 1.4.7.
- Blue Z 5.83.
- Gstreamer 1.26.6.
- Power Profiles Daemon 0.30.
For everything else, the official release notes only mention that applications and desktop have been updated, which in this 25.10 starts using GNOME 49. There's no further information. The wallpaper hasn't been updated either, remaining the same as the one in the header screenshot. UPDATED: The notes published today, October 9th, do mention that they've switched to using Thunderbird as their email client and have added more learning games.
Edubuntu 25.10 is now available for download from the button below. Updates will also be enabled from the operating system soon, which can be done from 25.04 or any installation if the operating system is configured to receive interim (non-LTS) updates.
