A while back, when the official Ubuntu family began to grow, I wondered if it was necessary. I had my eye on Edubuntu and Ubuntu Studio, curiously from the same developer—although the leader of the education edition is his wife, it must be said. I thought this because, in reality, they're little more than metapackages that can be installed separately. My colleague Diego had a different opinion: they're useful because not everyone can download everything so easily and quickly. Another thing that made me change my mind was that it's hard to imagine schools installing a system and then the metapackages separately. But, in any case, today's news is that it's now available. dubuntu 25.04.
Among the novelties, a flavor like this can't include many. Most of them are obtained from the main edition, with whom it shares a graphical environment. But there are other things to keep in mind, as shown below.
Most notable new features of Edubuntu 25.04
- Launch of normal, provisional or cycle interim, which means it will be supported for 9 months, until January 2026.
- gnomes 48.
- Linux 6.14.
- Updated base packages:
- systemd 257.4.
- Table 25.0.x.

- Improvements to the installer. Among other things, this makes it easier to create dual-boot installations.
- For Qt/KDE-based applications, theming via Kvantum is now included, primarily as a workaround for the inability to change the accent color in those applications. This theme is based on GNOME's libadwaita, which is the basis for Ubuntu's default theme (Yaru). Unfortunately, the colors don't change automatically if changed in Settings, so those who want a consistent look for the accent color will have to change it in the Kvantum Manager.
- GNOME Notes has been replaced by GNote.
- Similarly, the GNOME Dictionary has been replaced by Artha, which is more of a thesaurus but also performs dictionary operations.
