GNOME introduces new features for Web, Halftone, and several other apps in its circle.

This week in GNOME

It's the weekend again and GNOME has republished a post about the latest developments in his circle over the past week. Specifically, what happened between May 16th and 23rd. Most of the new developments relate to application updates, but also to some libraries, such as GLib, where SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER has been added to journald log messages output by the default event handler, which will make log messages easier to find.

The other point that is not about a new app is that this week has arrived Phosh 0.47.0, which, pending GNOME's release of its own offering, is the most popular mobile GNOME.

This version of the mobile Linux environment has arrived with its quick Feedback settings, which now have a status page with a "Do Not Disturb" button and a quick access button to Feedback settings. Additionally, the on-screen keyboard makes better use of available space by displaying auto-completes, adds emojis to auto-completes, and can display a pop-up window for the character being typed.

This week in GNOME

  • WebKit has gained a preferences page that allows you to enable and disable WebKit features at runtime. Tech Preview versions of the browser will display the preferences page by default, while in regular versions it is hidden and can be activated with the following command: gsettings set org.gnome.Epiphany.ui webkit-features-page trueThis should make it easier for front-end developers to test upcoming features. Note that WebKit feature settings are not persistent and will be reset to their default state on each release.

GNOME Web Settings

  • Déjà Dup Backups now supports restore mount, allowing you to restore files using your native file manager (instead of the previous in-app file explorer).
  • Halftone 0.7.0 introduces a long-awaited feature: support for image zoom! From now on, you can easily check even the smallest details simply by using the scroll wheel or gestures on your touchpad/touchscreen. This version also improves stability and user experience by correctly handling and reporting errors that occur during image loading. No more endless loading screens!

Halftones 0.7.0

  • Tuner is a new management center add-on for GNOME, sort of like a more flexible settings app. More information and screenshots at this link.

And that's been it for this week at GNOME.
