The project KDE has launched this week the stable version of Plasma 6.6As expected, this week's news update begins by discussing this, before moving on to what's coming next. And what's coming will involve fixing bugs in upcoming releases following the Fibonacci sequence and the new features of Plasma 6.7, which will arrive mid-year.
If you're wondering, no, the Plasma 6.7 wallpaper isn't the one shown in the header. It's the image known as "Flow," which was submitted to the wallpaper contest for the later versions of the 5.x series. I simply thought it would look good.
Before continuing, it's worth noting that Plasma 6.6 maintenance updates will now be released weekly (next Tuesday), then weekly, then every two weeks, then every three weeks, and so on, following the Fibonacci sequence until reaching Plasma 6.6.6, which will be the last in the series. With that explained, here's a list of the new features released this week.
New Features Coming to KDE
plasma 6.7.0
- In the Overview effect, it is now possible to switch between virtual desktops by scrolling with the mouse wheel or pressing the Page Up/Page Down keys.
- In Wayland, you can optionally synchronize the digital pen pointer with the mouse pointer or touchpad pointer if it better suits pen use.
- The old print queue dialog has been replaced by a comprehensive print queue viewer application, which allows you to manage multiple queues from several printers connected locally or over a network. It maintains a simple experience for the typical single-printer scenario and incorporates advanced features for multi-printer environments.
- It is now possible to exclude windows from screen recording using permanent window rules.
- A new command-line option –release-capture was added to Spectacle, allowing it to be started with the setting to accept capture on click and drop, making it easier to use with automation tools.
KDE interface improvements
plasma 6.6.1
- The Custom Tile feature accessible with Meta+T no longer inappropriately respects key repeat rates, making it virtually impossible to open with very high repeat rates.
- The close buttons in the Alt+Tab task selector in Thumbnails mode are now more legible over window previews.
- The Networks widget now displays a more appropriate icon in the panel or system tray when Wi-Fi is turned off.
plasma 6.7.0
- The System Monitor application and widgets now respect the chosen binary unit. For example, if you prefer to display sizes in GB instead of GiB, the monitoring tools will reflect this correctly.
- If the automatically generated scaling factor for a display is very close to 100%, 200%, or 300%, it is now rounded to that value to prioritize performance and visual fidelity.
- The Color Picker widget now displays more appropriate information text and placeholders when it has not yet been used.
- Various parts of Plasma now consistently use the term "UEFI Firmware Configuration" to refer to UEFI-based configuration tools.
- The "Finish this locked window" dialog now displays a progress indicator while attempting to close it, preventing the impression that it has become stuck.
- The Widget Explorer sidebar now appears on the screen where the pointer is located, instead of always being shown on the leftmost screen.
Performance and technical in KDE
plasma 6.6.1
- The performance of animations across the system was improved by relying more heavily on the Wayland Presentation Time protocol.
