KDE is preparing a feature to record ourselves with the microphone and is also preparing several improvements to the Plasma interface.

Recording ourselves with the microphone in KDE Plasma

KDE They've also released their weekly update. Over the past seven days, the "K Team" has implemented several improvements across diverse areas, including enhanced multi-monitor and multi-GPU support, performance enhancements, interface improvements, and fixes for unexpected crashes. This is hardly unexpected: they continue to refine the desktop environment to make one of the best graphical environments (for many distributions, it's already the best, as it's their choice) even better and more stable.

What follows is the list with news This week's highlights. Although many bugs have been fixed for Plasma 6.6 and 6.7, we won't be adding them to our list. Anyone wanting more information should visit the link to the original blog post, which we'll provide at the end of this article.

Key new features in KDE

plasma 6.7

  • A feature has been implemented that allows you to record your own voice with the microphone and play it back, making it easy to know if the recording level is too high or too low. You can then adjust the level until it is appropriate (header capture).
  • Notification portal support has been added, allowing notifications sent by Flatpak and other caged applications using portals to be configured in the same way as notifications for traditionally packaged applications.

Framework 6.25

  • Searches using KRunner can now convert from the unit "momme", which measures the weight of silk fabrics.

Notable improvements to the KDE interface

plasma 6.6.4

  • The app launch animation with the bounce effect next to the pointer now looks better when using a fractional scale factor.
  • The process of selecting a weather station in the weather report widget using the keyboard has been sped up.
  • You can now drag recent items from launcher menus to the desktop.
  • The network widget now immediately reports the last network used, instead of only doing so after restarting Plasma.
  • The task manager widget now instantly updates the icon of a pinned or running application whose icon has been changed, instead of only doing so after restarting Plasma.

plasma 6.7

  • The screen selection interface (e.g., for screen sharing or casting) now displays enhanced visualizations for screens, showing their background wallpapers.

KDE screen selector

  • The highly customizable folder selection dialog box that appeared in various KDE applications has been removed; now choosing a folder uses the standard "Open" dialog box, and only displays folders.
  • Plasma Vaults' locked chests now have their mount points in read-only mode and carry a padlock icon, making it clearer what they are and preventing users and applications from accidentally saving files there, which would lock the chest from mounting.
  • Wi-Fi bandwidth can now be limited for networks in infrastructure mode.

Framework 6.25

  • Several message dialog boxes in KDE software now wrap their text to approximately 70 characters instead of based on screen width.

Performance and technical improvements in KDE

plasma 6.6.4

  • The blur effect in Konsole now works correctly with the wavy window effect.

plasma 6.7

  • Screen recordings made with Spectacle and other software that uses KPipeWire now utilize the correct rendering device on multi-GPU systems, so the resulting recordings are always accurate and valid.
  • A “multi-GPU swapchain” has been implemented for KWin, which will enable future performance improvements in use cases with multiple GPUs and Vulkan support.
  • The system monitor and its widgets have been improved to detect multiple GPUs.
  • The system monitor and its widgets have been made to no longer ignore fully encrypted disks and RAID elements when collecting disk I/O statistics.
  • The performance of the Alt+Tab switch has been improved while the "Highlight Window" effect is active (which it is by default) and there are many minimized windows.

wayland 1.48

  • After more than six years of development, Wayland's session restoration protocol is complete and merged. KWin already has a preliminary implementation, so we should soon start seeing significant progress on this long-awaited feature.

Coming soon to your KDE distribution

Plasma 6.6.4 is expected to arrive on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, and Frameworks 6.25 on April 10. No official announcement has been made yet, so it is expected that there will continue to be three Plasma releases throughout at least 2026.
