
Barring anything too unusual, there will be a major desktop update next week. KDEThe project will deliver Plasma 6.6, bringing with it new features and user interface improvements. The "K Team" has been working on bug fixes for this iteration for some time now, ever since they released the alpha and beta versions of Plasma 6.6, and everything is now in top form. They have no other choice, as the release is imminent.
What follows is the List of the new products that have been presented to us this weekVery few for Plasma 6.6, since we don't include the bug fixes section here, but that's what you'd expect when you're on the verge of a release.
KDE interface improvements
plasma 6.7.0
- The “Remote Desktop” page in System Preferences has been moved to the “Security & Privacy” group within System Preferences.
- The way loop devices are managed in the Disks and Devices widget has been improved.
- The visual jagged effect in the image splitting of wallpaper previews showing light and dark versions has been reduced.
- The Kicker app menu widget now supports using a non-square icon for the panel button, just like Kickoff.
- A specific global action has been added to undo the quick tiling of a window. It doesn't have a keyboard shortcut assigned by default, but one can be configured manually.
- Videos in SDDM login screen themes can now be previewed in System Preferences.
- The appearance of several dialogues created by KWin has been improved.
- You can now configure how long it takes for the window selector to appear when you hold down Alt+Tab.
Framework 6.24
- In Kirigami-based applications, hovering over buttons that can be activated with keyboard shortcuts now displays those shortcuts.
Gear 26.04.0
- By configuring a Samba share for a folder and allowing connections from the network, the Samba service is now activated on systemd-based distributions if necessary, completing the work to make sharing via Samba as easy as possible.
Performance and technical in KDE
plasma 6.6.0
- Support has been added for setting custom modes on virtual screens.
- Support for GPU temperature monitoring has been added to more GPU models.
plasma 6.7.0
- Scrolling in scrollable views generated by KWin no longer runs eight times slower than it should. Although almost no one noticed the problem, fixing it makes it easier to add a feature to switch virtual desktops by scrolling in the Overview effect of Plasma 6.7.
Frameworks
- Moving a file to the recycle bin is now up to 50 times faster and more efficient.
Coming soon to your KDE distribution
KDE Plasma 6.5.6 is expected to arrive on March 10th, and Frameworks 6.23 on March 13th. Plasma 6.6 is slated for release on February 17th, 2026. No official announcement has been made yet, so it's expected that there will continue to be three Plasma releases throughout at least 2026.
