Just yesterday, while testing things on my mini PC with Bazzite, I noticed that it used plasma 6.4, and one of the new features in that series allows you to drag and drop files to the new location if it's the same disk. I couldn't remember where it was, so I used the search function in System Preferences. KDE. Many results may appear, and the project has come up with a solution.
In the near future, KDE System Preferences will allow you to disable unnecessary pages on your computer. For example, if you have a computer without Bluetooth, you can disable that page, which will improve your browsing experience. The following is a list of the news this week in KDE, because, although it might not seem so from the introduction, this is one of those articles.
New Features Coming to KDE
plasma 6.5.0
- Pages in System Preferences can now communicate a little better with the main application. They can be marked as "not relevant," for example, when the necessary hardware is not available (header screenshot).
- You can also export actions that will appear in the sidebar, allowing quick access to things like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This has already been implemented for Bluetooth, and more pages are expected to adopt these features where it makes sense.
- Discover has gained support for flatpak+https:// URLs, allowing install buttons on Flathub to automatically open Discover.
Interface improvements
plasma 6.5.0
- Muting microphones with a dedicated “Mute Microphone” button or shortcut, or using the secret Meta+Mute Microphone shortcut, now mutes all microphones, instead of just the active one. This matches the behavior of muting speakers and other sound output devices.
- Numerous improvements have been made to the cross-app window lifting system throughout Plasma.
- The Firefox browser integration plugin now prevents the system from sleeping while a file is downloading, as Firefox does not provide this feature.
- Detected wireless networks are now displayed on the relevant System Configuration page, not just in the system tray applet. You can also connect to them from there.
- Almost all KRunner plugins now start providing results after typing the first character.
- Shortcuts for moving a window directly to another virtual desktop are now displayed in the context menu of that window's title bar.
- It's easier to identify which displays are replicas of others because their serial numbers and connector names are now clearly displayed.
KDE Technical and Performance
plasma 6.5.0
- Discover's firmware update backend ("Fwupd") has been made much faster, after it was discovered to be a bottleneck when starting Discover.
Framework 6.18
- The "dumb Copilot" key on many modern laptop keyboards can be used as a trigger to launch applications or any other action in places where keyboard shortcuts can be configured. There's no way to remap it to emulate another key yet, but this is expected in the future.
- Thumbnail generation speed has been improved in KDE and Plasma applications.
Coming soon to your KDE distribution
As for bugs, the 4 high-priority bugs and the 23 15-minute bugs have been maintained.
KDE Plasma 6.4.5 is expected to arrive on September 9th and Frameworks 6.18 on September 12th.
