KDE He launched plasma 6.4.2 The first day of this month, a release that arrived a week after the point-one version, which in turn arrived seven days later than the point-zero version. The next version will be Plasma 6.4.3, and it will be delivered two weeks later, as KDE follows a Fibonacci-formatted calendar. It's already preparing some modifications for that iteration, but it's also fully focused on Plasma 6.5, which will arrive later.
What follows is a list with the most outstanding news that have been introduced in the last week, remembering two things: the points included are usually changes that are yet to come, and the corrected bugs are not included so that this type of articles do not get too dirty.
Interface improvements
plasma 6.4.3
- Automatic display scaling in Wayland will no longer give us a default scaling factor that's only slightly higher than 100%, as these factors often cause significant blurring. It will now round the calculated scaling factor down to 100% if it would otherwise be only slightly higher.
plasma 6.5.0
- Recordings of a specific window now also include any popups created by the target window.
- The Bluetooth Assistant has been changed to not display unnamed devices by default. This should make the list clearer and quicker to review.
- When we mute the system, changing the volume in any way now reactivates all playback devices, instead of just the active one. This prevents a non-default playback device from being muted and therefore not playing sound when we deliberately switch to it or when the system automatically selects it for some reason.
- The pop-up preview of an empty folder on the desktop now displays a placeholder message to make it more obvious what it is and not look like a broken item.
- KDE is working on its own virtual keyboard, which they hope will replace Maliit. The Plasma virtual keyboard has received a lot of attention lately, improving its look and addressing several usability issues. The Plasma keyboard isn't ready yet, but they're working hard to get there soon.
Framework 6.16
- When sorting by date in open/save dialogs opened by Plasma or any KDE application, the most recent files are now displayed first, instead of the most recent.
Performance and technical
plasma 6.5.0
- The Plasma widget template has been updated to support Plasma 6 and reflect the most modern best practices for widget development.
Framework 6.16
- The system's ability to detect which GPU is the most powerful has been improved for the purposes of the “Run this program using the most powerful GPU” feature.
