In mid-April, even before the release of what is now the current version of Ubuntu, Canonical made it known the code name of Ubuntu 25.10It's about an animal that is said to be the happiest person in the world, as quokkas seem to be constantly smiling. Knowing the animal's name and the adjective that accompanies it isn't a relevant moment, nor is the next step, which has already taken place.
Ubuntu 25.10 now has begun its developmentWhat does this mean? Well, they've started preparing the repositories and the first migrations, as well as making some decisions. For the average user, or even for the advanced user who wants to try something out, nothing until they take the next step, which we'll see in the coming days.
Ubuntu 25.10 will release the first Daily Build soon
It's just a matter of days before they release the first Daily Build., and I'm sorry to disappoint those who aren't quite sure how all this works, but it won't be a huge moment either. The first Daily Builds are just the previous version, in this case Ubuntu 25.04, with the new development repositories. That is, the current version on which they'll start adding changes.
The most interesting developments will begin to emerge in the coming months. If Canonical decides to make any changes or implement its own implementations to GNOME or any component of the operating system, we'll be able to take a look. And by September, we'll have something much more advanced, with the latest version of the graphical environment, expected to be GNOME 49, and the new kernel, which will be around Linux 6.16 or 6.17.
Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka will arrive in october, but the exact date has not yet been announced. The kernel and the new desktops will be accompanied by updates to the base packages and other widely used programs such as Firefox, Thunderbird, and LibreOffice.
