It's been just over two weeks since Canonical will announce the code name for the next version of its operating system. It will be Plucky Puffin, a brave puffin that was known to arrive in April because that is what tradition dictates. The first step of knowing the code name is followed by the second, this one a bit more important, and that is that Ubuntu 25.04 development has started.
What does this mean? Not much, really. Ubuntu releases come out every six months, with an LTS in Aprils of even-numbered years. Development has started, meaning the next release has begun to be laid, but there's nothing to look forward to yet. No Daily Live available, and when the first ones are released, what we will have will be nothing more than an Ubuntu 24.10 with development repositories on which they will add all the changes that will arrive with Plucky Puffin.
Ubuntu 25.04 is coming on April 17, 2025
Blade development route for Ubuntu 25.04 it would look like this:
- December 19: One week of optional Ubuntu Testing.
- February 20: Debian feature freeze and import freeze.
- February 27: Another optional testing week.
- March 13: UI freeze.
- March 20: Kernel feature and documentation freeze.
- March 24: Beta and hardware enablement freeze.
- March 27: Beta launch.
- April 3: kernel freeze.
- April 20: Final freeze, Release Candidate launch, and end of translations.
- April 17: Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin is officially released.
As for what it will bring, well, a Linux that will be between 6.13 and 6.14, GNOME 48 and little else is known. It has been confirmed that There will be performance improvements, but to see to what extent we will have to wait weeks, if not months. Along with the main edition, the rest of the family will arrive with the same base and other improvements that will depend on their philosophies and graphical environments.
