Last April, Ubuntu's Studio flavor used Plasma 5.27 for the third consecutive time. It came out in early 2023, and was implemented in 23.04, but by 23.10 there was no new series and the next one was an LTS release, so they decided not to bet and stick with that 5.27. Ubuntu Studio 24.10 It's available since Thursday, and it's a version that has been supported for 9 months, so they can now take a little more risk and have finally made the jump.
Ubuntu Studio 24.10 It is based on Kubuntu 24.10, but it has its own customization, one that is somewhat reminiscent of what we saw when it was based on Xubuntu/Xfce. In addition to those interface differences, we also find some meta-packages for content creators that offer multimedia applications. Pretty much everything is covered, should you prefer to generate video, audio or image content.

Mainline kernel, new look and minimal installation available
The generic kernel will implement RT patches in Linux 6.12. Therefore, when it arrives, the _rt kernels will not be needed, and for that reason Ubuntu Studio 24.10 has been ahead of the game and has switched to using the kernel mainline. For its part, Canonical has also been working on this for some time, and Ubuntu kernel can now handle real-time loadsThese options can be changed from Ubuntu Studio Audio Configuration and can be customized depending on the workload.
As for the topic, Ubuntu Studio has been using “Materia” since 19.04, except for 22.04 where Breeze was used. Materia has been discontinued, but it exists a fork called «Orchis» which is what they used in 24.10.
And for those who prefer more control over what is installed, Ubuntu Studio 24.10 now offers a minimal installation.
