A new unofficial version of Ubuntu Software based on Flutter is coming to town, because anything is better than Canonical's Snap Store

Ubuntu Software based on Flutter

More than three years ago we published an article about the Snap Store with some optimism. And it is already said: “ignorance makes happiness”. How could we have imagined that Canonical would do what they did and that their store would always be running in the background and consuming RAM? Impossible. For that reason we ended up recommending installing GNOME Software. Now we have found out that there is an alternative project to Ubuntu Software, an unofficial store that is much better than Canonical's.

What initially started out as Snap Store ended up staying under the name of Ubuntu Software, that is, being the official software center of its main edition (GNOME). But there is a team, the Ubuntu Flutter team, that is developing its own store, one that is nowhere near official, but looks very good and nothing can be ruled out for the future. Let's not forget that an installer is being developed also based on Flutter which is expected to become the official one in the next versions (maybe for 24.04).

Ubuntu Software would be much better if the Flutter version is used

The current Ubuntu Software is more like the same GNOME Software with the modifications that Canonical is interested in. Among them, that the first thing it offers is a Snap package, if what we are looking for is available in this type of package. Then the thing about it constantly consuming RAM. What they are doing behind the scenes now is something totally different. It is a very fast software center and with adaptive interface, so it will look good on all types of screens, including mobile ones. Also, when an application is accessed, the information appears as a pop-up window or "modal", which gives a very visual touch. And for everything else, it is a software center like all: you can search for all kinds of software, update it or delete it.

Currently, this Ubuntu Software based on Flutter is in alpha phase, so its use is not recommended unless it is done in a virtual machine or in alternative installations. We are talking about a software center, so if something goes wrong we could damage an important part of a program or make it completely unusable. In any case, from here all my support to those who are working on it, and hopefully it will come to light and end up as the official Ubuntu store.
