The news came out yesterday and many consider it incredible, but taking into account the creator of it and the ideas that we have about the process, it seems that it is something very simple that will take place in the short term.
The leader of UBPorts, Marius Gripsgård, has announced that it is working on a new feature for Ubuntu Phone that would allow Android apps to be installed and run on Ubuntu Phone, something that would work as it currently does on other operating systems such as Sailfish OS.
Marius's idea is to use the Sailfish OS tools in combination with an intermediate layer that makes it easier for Android apps to create the screen on the Ubuntu Phone Mir server. This would be something similar to how Wine works, that is, Marius intends to carry out a program similar to Wine that is compatible with Android apps and allows the user to install and run Android apps on Ubuntu Phone.
Android apps already work on other operating systems such as Sailfish OS
This in addition to introduce billions of apps to the Ubuntu Phone ecosystem, it would allow the Ubuntu desktop to be filled with new apps, interesting and powerful functions such as the Google Drive app or the Evernote app. Not forgetting all the web services that would come to Ubuntu such as the official YouTube application, Google Docs or Netflix, to name a few.
What is proposed by Marius is nothing extraordinary because, as we have said, Sailfish OS already offers something similar and Plasma Mobile will also offer it. Although it does seem that it will not be tomorrow or at the end of the year when we have it on our smartphone with Ubuntu but it will take more time to see it, but it seems that it will come.
Personally I think it is possible, but I don't know if it will really be interesting to launch Android apps to Ubuntu Phone or launch new devices with Ubuntu Phone What do you think?
