Firefox 71 will enable Picture-in-Picture by default

pip toggle

A couple of months ago, Firefox introduced an interesting novelty that was already available in Chrome: being able to watch the videos in Picture-in-Picture or PiP. For those who do not know it, it is known as Picture-in-Picture to the effect that it produces to be able to see a video within another or, in the case of browsers, to have a floating window on our desktop with the video in question. Right now, if we want to use the PiP function in the Mozilla browser we have to activate it manually, but that will change in Firefox 71.

That is the goal although, as usual, the launch will be gradual. The downside for Linux users is that, once again, we won't be the first to use this "novelty." Will reach Windows users first and, once you do, you can (or can) see the option without having to activate it previously from the about: config section of the browser, as we explained in its day in this article. In other words, the function will be enabled by default.

Firefox 71 on Windows, the first to try PiP enabled by default

What is not very clear is what we see in the screenshot above these lines. If you have activated it in Linux, you can see that the option appears as one more in the menu that appears when you secondary click (twice) on the video, but what Mozilla published in July it's more like a button or blue switch that appears when you move the cursor through the video. It is clear that this is much more comfortable and intuitive and when I finish writing this article I will try to see how it appears in Firefox Nightly (71) for Windows.

In any case, Firefox 71 will still take three months to arrive, since its launch is scheduled for December. Linux users will probably have to wait for Firefox 72 to see this function as it was explained in its day, something that will happen already in 2020. Better late than never.

PiP floating photon in Firefox

Updated: confirmed that in Firefox 71 for Windows it is activated by default and how it works: the button appears on the right in small when we move the cursor over the video and opens with the text included when we hover the cursor over it. In Linux we can activate it manually by changing the option "media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.video-toggle.enabled" to "true".
