We resume our old custom of talking about the news of the week in GNOME. We leave it to middle of last year For reasons that are not relevant here, but we are back with the same energy. Although not much has happened in the last seven days, at least in terms of the number of new releases, they have mentioned a couple of interesting ones, such as Debian 13 using GNOME 48, something unusual if we take into account that historically they have chosen a more "tested" version.
Debian usually releases a version every two years, if you don't count their unstable branches. What they will do is use the RC while developing "Trixie", so that they can use the stable version of the desktop later. Whether this becomes the new trend or not is something we will find out in 2027, when they release Debian 14.
Speaking of the next version of the desktop, in GNOME 48.beta, the GJS interactive console is now asynchronous, allowing signal handlers to be executed without blocking. It does not yet support await
, but it is a previous step. The creation of GObject.Value in JS has also been simplified, avoiding unnecessary manual steps. What follows are the rest of news, which are related to project applications.
Other new features in GNOME
- Shortwave 5.0 is now available, bringing back background playback and greatly improving recording of streams.
- Version 2.0 of Pins (formerly PinApp) is now available. The new version is the result of a complete rewrite, moving from Python to C. It brings a bunch of major and minor improvements, including a new grid view and support for auto-starting applications.
- Words! 0.3 is now available with support for multiple dictionaries and different word lengths. A German dictionary has also been added.
- Finally, the guide to exporting extensions to GNOME Shell 48 is now available.
And that's been it for this week at GNOME.
