Tras an article with this absence as highlighted, GNOME has returned to the "new normal" during the week from April 13 to 20. As normal since they received the donation from Sovereig Tech Fund. Since November 2023, the project that is behind the desktop used by the main versions of Ubuntu, Fedora or Debian, among others, many of the week's news remain small and not so small changes that have been made taking advantage of that million of dollars.
Among the small changes this week, although not introduced thanks to the SVT donation, Software notifications now include application icons. What follows is the list with news that have taken place over the last seven days.
This week in GNOME
- With money from the Sovereigh Tech Fund, several changes have been made to global shortcuts, improvements to Nautillus, many others to the accessibility section, and new participants have been welcomed into the team.
- Software now has app icons in notifications.
- GNOME Maps now has variants for dark mode for default renders, when there is no line color available for a public transit provider).
- Podcasts 0.7.1 is now available on Flathub. The highlights are:
- Replacing add popover button with a dedicated page.
- Add support for streaming.
- Add additional keyboard shortcuts.
- Various fixes and performance improvements.
- Gaphor 2.25.0 has arrived with a new user interface. The interface now better follows Adwaita's style. The property editor has been revised, so it can be used from both the diagrams and the model browser.
- A change has been delivered to Dialect to support the free DeepL API, resolving the app's most popular and oldest vendor request.
- Retro v2 has arrived with:
- Supports 12h and 24h clock formats. Follows GNOME Date and Time preferences while sandboxed thanks to the new libportal API for the configuration portal.
- Improved power usage by using a more efficient method of getting the time and using the GtkWindow.suspended magic property to stop updating the clock when the window is not visible.
- Best stand for round watches. The new GTK renderer has fixed the visual bug in transparent corners caused by a large border radius. Retro now restores the window dimensions and disables the border radius when maximizing so it looks good regardless of the shape.
- Controls have been moved to a floating header bar to keep them out of the way and prevent interference with customizations.
- Mahjongg 3.40.1 is now available on Flathub. This version fixes some regressions in the GTK 4 port. In particular, the game no longer freezes after finishing a round, and the tile layout can be changed when using a language other than English.
- Fractal 7.rc, the matrix client, arrived with:
- Account recovery, introduced during this cycle, could lead to an unclear situation where it remained incomplete even after the process had been successfully completed.
- After fixing a focus issue in GtkListView, we have gotten rid of more focus issues in our widgets. That should make the room history fully accessible with keyboard navigation.
- Third-party verification, which occurs in a direct chat, was partially broken as the banner about a verification in progress no longer appeared. The culprit was found and the opportunity has been taken to improve safety instructions. Along with this bug fix, a layer of polish has been applied.
- As usual, this version includes other improvements, fixes and new translations.
- Flatseal 2.2.0 is now available. This new version comes with refined visuals, navigation and adaptive behavior, much more streamlined with the latest version of GNOME. It also comes with bug fixes for edge cases involving global overrides and Greek translation.
And that's been it for this week at GNOME.
