How to install LibreOffice 6.1 on Ubuntu 18.04

LibreOffice logos

In the last hours a new version of LibreOffice, LibreOffice 6.1, has been released. A version that introduces major changes to the office suite, despite the fact that version 6 of this suite was released not long ago. LibreOffice 6.1 introduces changes in almost all the programs that make up the office suite and has even created a customization for Windows environments.

Libreoffice 6.1 introduces the CoLibre icon collection for Windows environments, a collection of icons different from the one that comes for Ubuntu but important if we want Windows users to start using Free Software instead of Proprietary Software. In LibreOffice 6.1 Writer the paging operation for the Epub format has been improved as well as its export. Reading .Xls files has also been improved in this version and LibreOffice 6.1 Base changes its main engine to a Firebird-based engine, which makes the program more powerful than before without losing its compatibility with Access databases. The integration with non-Gnome desktops has also been improved, being more compatible with desktops like Plasma. The correction of bugs and problems is also present in this version of LibreOffice. The rest of the changes and corrections you can know in the release notes.

If we want to install LibreOffice 6.1 on Ubuntu, we have to do it through the snap package. This package already has this version in its Candidate channel, so to install this version we just have to open the terminal and write the following:

sudo snap install libreoffice --candidate

This will begin the installation of LibreOffice 6.1. If we do a minimal installation of Ubuntu and we have LibreOffice 6 through the snap package, It is best to first uninstall LibreOffice and then do a one-time installation of LibreOffice 6.1. It can be tedious, but Ubuntu will work better than having two different versions of LibreOffice and it will also save space.
