What is your favorite torrent client? Mine is Transmission. I have to confess that I used to use uTorrent before, but I stopped doing it when I found out that it did "weird things" like mining BitCoins using the computers that used it. Since then I have tried again and stayed at Transmission. It is a torrent network download manager that is very easy to use. Like everything, sometimes a first push is better, so below you have a small guide that explains how to use Transmission to download .torrent files.
Downloading with Transmission
The good thing about Transmission is its simplicity. It has all the options that we could wish for, but these are not very visible. His idea is to show only what may interest us in most cases. In this way, we will not have distractions or get involved using the program. But, on the other hand, it does not have a .torrent file browser, but this is something that very few torrent clients have.
To download files with Transmission we need the torrent files that we just mentioned. These files are hosted on web pages and there are search engines that are in charge of locating the torrent files, searches that they carry out on different web pages. The most famous website, which is not working for me at the moment (searches appear blank) is The Pirate Bay. As it is the most attacked website and it spends much of its time down, I will recommend you to search in Kick Ass Torrent.
What we have to do to download with Transmission + Kick Ass Torrent is to follow these steps:
- Let kat.cr. If, like me, you use DuckDuckGo as a search engine, you can use the bang! Kick «whatever» to take you directly to Kick Ass Torrents and show you the desired search.
- We search the dialog box for what we want. For this example I have searched for Ubuntu 16.
- When you press Enter, it will take you to a window like the one below. What you have to do, or what I recommend, is simply click on the magnet icon (marked in the red box), which is the Magnet. A Magnet is the link to the torrent and using it it is not necessary to download the torrent file.
- The first time you click on a .magnet link, the system will ask you which program you want to open it with. We chose Tranmission.
- If we had already linked the .magnet links to Transmission, clicking on the magnet will open the download information window, as you can see in the following screenshot. Now we can only wait.
If we want to always download the files in the same folder and not modify any value (as is my case), we can go to the menu Edit / Preferences / Downloads y uncheck the Show torrent options window box. If we do, just clicking on the magnet icon will start the download.
General Options
When the .torrent is added, we will see an image like the following:
As I have said before, Transmission is characterized by offering us a simple image, so we will not see many options. Admittedly, the design is not the most beautiful in the world, but there is plenty, you'll see. Among the buttons that we see in the main window we see the one of Open (in case we have or download a .torrent file instead of clicking on the .magnet link), Start, Pause o Delete. If we want to know something about a .torrent, we select it and click on Properties.
In the lower left we have a wheel of options with which we can limit speed upload and / or download. Next to it there is a turtle, which will help us to activate the alternative limits (by default, 50kB / s both upstream and downstream).
We can also upload Torrents with Transmission
If we wish, we can also upload our own Torrents. Uploading torrent files would require a complete tutorial, but can be summarized in the following steps:
- Let's go to the menu File / New.
- We choose the Source file, that is, the one we want to share.
- The important thing is the Trackers. We have to find some good ones and add them in their corresponding box.
- We wait for the torrent to be created.
- Now we have to upload the created file to a website that hosts torrent files, such as the aforementioned Kick Ass Torrents. We upload it and fill in the fields.
- The last thing is, perhaps, the most important: be patient and do not move the files or delete the torrent until it has been uploaded.
As you can see, Transmission is very easy to use. Do you have another Torrent client as a favorite to use in Ubuntu? Which?
Interesting post on how to use Transmission, but I think you should be careful with using Kickass Torrents as an example of how to use this torrent client, who knows, maybe you will be sued or something similar for linking to a page that has piracy lawsuits.
I think the problem is not that Kickass comes out, the problem is that in the example you are downloading a music album, you could have put a distro in the example.
By the way, since we are recommending qbittorrent, for my taste much better than transmission and it already comes with a search engine that searches several torrent pages, including Kickass.
what do you think of ktorrens
I think the same as Rubén, I use Qbittorrent because it is complete and easy to use, the only thing to notice as always what you share and where you download, I advise using the same folder,

Qbittorrent suits me better. I don't know why, but I'm doing much better
Better qbittorrent and I am going to explain why, in my time of window $ and emule one thing was what I put to download and another thing that downloaded and I am not only talking about quality, that is why I changed programs and protocols until I came across torrents, and utorrent was the last one I tried on that system, in parallel I used VLC and then and until now Smplayer, which with them I could just see what I was downloading with just a 5 or 10% download finished, although I was going to the jerks due to the missing clear and here where qbittorrent comes in, that once downloaded a video that is not compressed in zip or rar and that is not an iso image, as far as I know only in qbittorrent you can select the download with ctrl and Right click and in the context menu check "download first and last parts first" and "sequential download" and if the speed is also good, when it goes by 10% you will be able to see the film or series in the best stremio style, the offer of the latter lacks po r the moment of dubbing into Spanish, that's why I prefer the downloads with qbittorrent from » http://www.divxtotal.com/series/pagina/1/ »Among other websites.
Something that I did not know and it happened to me this week, I download a dvd image of an iso movie, and without mounting it or anything I dropped it on the Smplayer and it took a little while but it played it with all the subtitle and dubbing options.
For the first time I am using it, and it is to download the new version of elementary os, currently I use ubuntu 16.04.1, and as the article says it is really easy, it is the first one I try and I think I am going to stay here for a while using Transmission, while it is easy and fast to use here I will be ...
