Last February many things changed in KDE. The jump was made to Plasma 6.0, but also to Qt6 and KDE Frameworks 6.0. The collateral damage was suffered by the applications, whose December set was delayed to February, the April set to May and both had only two maintenance updates. A few moments ago, the project that K likes so much has made official the launch of KDE Gear 24.08, and with it the whole circle closes, returning to the usual calendar.
KDE Gear 24.08 is a new major update to the official KDE applications, and it has arrived with new features. The project has told us about some of them, such as changes in Dolphin, Filelight or Kdenive. What follows is the list with the most notable news, but whoever wants to see them all can do so at this link.
KDE Gear 24.08 Highlights
From today, Dolphin launches new “Move to new folder” option that will appear when you right-click on a file, which will allow us to create a folder and copy the file into it all at the same time. Also in the KDE file manager, double clicking on the background will select everything by default. On the other hand, if Filelight is not installed, it can now be obtained from the information where we see the free space.
Console has arrived with an improvement that allows you to make bookmarks in the sidebar. This reminds me of Visual Studio Code, when we search for something and on the right we see where there is a match. The difference here is that we will be the ones who can mark the points that interest us.
Kdenlive now has a new keyframe curve editor to customize effects and easing methods (cubic in/out and exponential in/out) for fades. Furthermore, the effects stack widget has been redesigned and the transform effect has been improved, which now allows you to choose clips directly from the monitor. It also includes a new grille and the design and behavior have been improved.
Regarding social networks, NeoChat has seen its security improved by allowing you to block invitations from unknown users and Tokodon can now notify when we identify ourselves in other instances. To publish on Mastodon, you can now easily attach images from the Internet, cite other publications and publish the text editor to comfortably compose a toot.
And even more
Kate 24.08 improves its document formatting plugin with better support for bash, d, fish, Nix config, opsi-script, QML, and YAML files. In related news, the Language Server Protocol (LSP) feature adds support for the Gleam, PureScript, and Typst languages.
KDE has also told us about the new version of Falkon, your web browser. It is not very popular, but it exists and is a good option for those who want a simple and light alternative. This August they have taken the opportunity to update it, making it work smoother, simpler and safer.
Among the rest of the news:
- Okular – KDE's green-certified document reader – improves support for fillable forms in PDF documents, gets a makeover for Windows, and adds a more useful zoom feature.
- PlasmaTube – a player for watching online videos from popular sites on your desktop – adds an option to block sponsored sections in videos.
- Elisa, our elegant music player, incorporates the “Play Next” function and allows you to resize the sidebar and playlists.
KDE Gear 24.08 has been announced today, and what we can now download is its code, although it is better not for users to do so. The best and most common thing is to wait for our Linux distribution to add the new packages, something that will happen in a time that will depend on each one of them. They will also appear little by little on Flathub, and some also on Snapcraft. The next three months there will be point updates, and in December the next major update.
