The developer team of this non-linear video editor announced yesterday that Kdenlive 24.05 is now available. In addition to recovering the very useful audio capture function, it includes stability improvements.
The highlights of the announcement have to do with exponential speed improvement when moving clips with the spacer tool, faster sequence switching, improved AV1 NVENC support, and faster timeline operations. On the other hand, features are added that the developers themselves describe as "new and interesting" and I can't help but agree: group effects and automatic subtitle translation.
Kdenlive 24.05.0 is now available
I haven't had a chance to test it yet because the Appimage version indicated a lack of dependencies, and the Flathub store version was not yet updated, so I'm going to limit myself to quoting the announcement when it says that:
This version comes with a big performance boost and the usual batch of quality of life, UI, and usability improvements.
Among the arguments cited for this statement are:
- Huge increase in clip movement speed with the spacer tool.
- Faster sequence changes.
- Increased support for AVI NVENC
- Faster timeline operations.
The announcements include a mix of thanks and reminders of how useful users' financial contributions are.
Other cool features
- Group Effects:A The ability included in the previous version to add an effect to multiple clips at the same time is added to control parameters related to all effects within the group.
- Multi-format rendering: A single project can now be rendered using multiple aspect ratios.
- Automatic subtitle translation: It is done locally, but requires the installation of an AI model and a Python module. Again, I haven't tested the program yet and have no idea about the hardware requirements.
- External cameras: A new interface is added to create and edit proxy profiles for external cameras and a predefined profile is added for Insta 360 AcePro.
- audio capture: The default capture folder can now be set in the project tray and settings. This allows it to be done in a subfolder of the project instead of the root project.
- Monitor playback improvements: You can set play and pause by clicking on the monitor. In addition, the ability to play from the cursor position was included and improvements were made to the pan and zoom effects from the middle mouse button.
- Subtitle: In addition to improving the appearance of the subtitles by including effects such as bold and italics, you can set a maximum number of characters. In the configuration panel the user can see the size of the different models to convert text to speech.
While we wait for this new version of Kdenlive to be available in the repositories of Linux distributions, we can download it in AppImage and Flatpak format. You can also find it in versions for Windows and Mac.
Remember that the AppImage format does not require installation but you do have to give it execution permissions. As for the Flatpak version, as soon as it is available, it is installed with the command;
flatpak install flathub org.kde.kdenlive
What is Kdenlive
Although if you have never heard of this program, the description of the features of this new version speaks for itself, we are going to explain what Kdenlive does.
It is a non-linear video editor. This is a term that comes from the days when videos were stored on tape and you had to go through previous content to get to the one you needed to edit. Now you can go directly to the position you need to work with.
To implement all its features, Kdenlive integrates multiple open source multimedia editing tools as well as Artificial Intelligence models.
