Linux 6.9-rc3 arrives with many fixes in Bcachefs

Linux 6.9-rc3

Linus Torvalds launched the third Release Candidate of the core that is currently in development. Linux 6.9-rc3 It is a little different from normal as there are many patches to fix Bcachefs due to corruption. It is not something that is done during kernel development, but it is never a bad time if what is introduced are patches to improve, especially if they correct problems that we are experiencing. It is not mentioned which versions this corruption affects, but it is assumed that it has been fixed during this week.

For everything else, Linux 6.9-rc3 has been as always. Most of the rest of the work carried out has been left to the drivers, architectural corrections and file systems. As for the size, it is a little bigger than usual, but not too much if we take into account all the patches that Bcachefs has monopolized.

Linux 6.9 is coming in May

«Ok, so this rc3 seems a little different from the usual ones, because there are a large series of bcachefs to do file system repair after corruption. Normally it's not something we'd see in an rc kernel, but hey, if you had a corrupt bcachefs filesystem you'd probably want this, and if you thought bcachefs was already stable, I have a bridge to sell you. Special treatment just for you, very cheap.

The bcachefs part is a little over a third of the patch, and if you ignore that part, things seem pretty normal, although there is perhaps a little more SoC noise than is common.

The rest are mainly drivers (sound has already been mentioned, but also networking and gpu), architecture fixes (mainly x86 and s390, some arm64), some filesystem noise (mainly smb client), some updates to self-check, and a random handful elsewhere.

It's actually not that big, although the bcachefs changes make it larger than typical for an RC3.«.

Linux 6.9 will arrive in may. It is expected on the 12th, or the 19th if it requires an eighth RC to put things in place. Even if a ninth candidate were necessary, something that I have never seen but they have existed, it would arrive the same month, but in this case on the 26th.

Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat will arrive next Thursday, April 25, and it will do so with the Linux 6.8 kernel. Ubuntu 24.10 OAdjective OAnimal will land in October with a kernel version that will be between Linux 6.10 and 6.11. We recommend that Ubuntu users and any official flavor stay with the kernel offered by the operating system, which is an original one but maintained by Canonical. If you decide you want the official one, you will have to install it on your own, either by hand or using tools like Mainline Kernels. Due to its simplicity and similarities with other software for these tasks, the latter is recommended for users with medium or low experience.
