In Ubunlog we write many times about how to install or configure something and we almost always say how to do it using the terminal. But not all users have been in the Linux world for so long; There are users who have never touched it, are used to Windows and do not even know how to change the desktop background of Ubuntu. This post is aimed at these users, so that they learn to change the desktop background, the theme of the windows and the behavior of the launcher.
Change the desktop background in Ubuntu it is very simple. Just right-click on any part of the desktop and select "Change desktop background." When you do, you will see something like what the image below these lines shows. We just have to click on an image so that it becomes the desktop background. But from the same window we can also change behavior from Ubuntu.
Changing Ubuntu's desktop background, theme, and behavior

If we want to add a new image, we will click on the plus button (+), we will search for it and select it. Another option is to add a new fund every X time, something we can achieve with the application Shotwell following these steps:
- We open Shotwell. We can do it by pressing the Windows key and searching for it by name.
- We select the photos that will be part of this changing background.
- With the photos selected, we go to the "File" menu.
- We select the option «Set as desktop slideshow ...«.
- We choose the time it will take to change to a new background by sliding the slider and we click on «Ok».
If we want to change the theme of the Ubuntu windows, all we have to do is, in the same window where we choose a new desktop background, display the Theme menu and choose another of those that are available. From this same window we can also modify the size of the launcher, for which we will have to move the slider right.

In the Behavior tab we can:
- Activate auto-hide (of the launcher), which will activate two new options.
- Reveal all the way to the left side or just the top left. This option refers to where we will have to put the pointer so that the Launcher appears.
- How sensitively will it appear in launcher. The larger it is, the more aggressive we will have to move the pointer closer to make it appear.
What we cannot do is put the launcher at the bottom of the screen or return it to its original position, or not from these settings. If, like me, you prefer it at the bottom, or you have changed it and want to put it back on the left, what you have to do is open a terminal and write one of these commands:
- Down: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher launcher-position Bottom
- Left: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher launcher-position Left
I know that in Linux there is much more to customize than these small modifications but, as I said at the beginning, this post is for those who have never touched Ubuntu or have touched it very little. Are you one of them and has this information helped you?
