The wait is over for those of you who were at Focal Fossa and would like to upgrade to Jammy Jellyfish without tinkering too much. Ubuntu 22.04.1 has been released, with which Canonical has opened the doors that allow updating from the same operating system for those that were on previous LTS versions, such as 20.04. It's a point upgrade, so no existing 22.04 user has to go crazy and reinstall from scratch.
Ubuntu 22.04 users already have all the new features installed in their operating system. 20.04.1 is nothing more than a new image that includes all the updates released since last April. For that reason it Canonical waits to open the doors for previous LTS versions, so that when they upload they do so to a version with some corrections, and not with the first thing they offer that, although it is true that it is released with the "stable" label, it is also true that it is not yet using most and have not fixed some bugs.
Ubuntu 22.04.1 are new ISOs with updates since April
Ubuntu 22.04.1 still use X11 if NVIDIA drivers are used, but has switched to using Wayland by default for users of Wayland hybrid drivers. As for its base, it remains in Linux 5.15, but occasional updates to applications and some desktops, such as GNOME 42 or Plasma, are included. Security and performance patches are also included.
Focal Fossa users can already update from the same operating system, while Jammy Jellyfish users do not have to do anything because they have received all the packages in the last few months. For fresh installations, the new images will appear soon on the official pages of all Ubuntu flavors, but can already be downloaded from cdimage.ubuntu.com, choosing the flavor, going to releases and choosing 22.04.1.
