Ubuntu Touch OTA-8, an unscheduled release to fix security flaws

Ubuntu Touch OTA-8 Focal

Last November, UBports launched the OTA-7 of their Ubuntu-based touch operating system. It was a surprise release, shortly after OTA-6, and they released it to address security flaws, among other minor changes. Today, already in March 2025, they have repeated the move with a release, in their own words, "unscheduled", a Ubuntu Touch 8 OTA-20.04 which has arrived with security fixes.

As always, the launch is being gradual, which means that, although it has already been announced, it will be arriving to compatible devices in the next few hours or days. The list of compatible devices is below.

  • Asus Zenfone Max Pro
  • F(x)tec Pro1 X
  • Fairphone 3 and 3+
  • Fairphone 4Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL
  • jing pad a1
  • Oneplus 5 and 5T
  • OnePlus 6 and 6T
  • OnePlus North N10 5G

What's new in Ubuntu Touch 8 OTA-20.04

Notable changes in this release include:

  • VoLTE (Voice over LTE) support is being rolled out again on Volla Phone X23 and Volla Phone 22 running Halium 12 port. Support for more devices will be launched in the future.
  • Added the ability to remove an image from a contact entry.
  • It is now possible to connect to a WPA3-protected Wi-Fi network.
  • General bug fixes and security updates for both Ubuntu and UBports.

Users currently on the stable channel will be able to apply the changes from the operating system's update tool, but, as we have explained, it may take a while for them to appear, as the rollout is gradual.
