Xubuntu 24.10 upgrades to Xfce, GNOME 47 and MATE 1.26

Xubuntu 24.10

Ubuntu's Xfce edition naturally uses Xfce, but only for the most part. To complete and improve the overall experience of the operating system, its developers also decide to implement components from other desktops, such as MATE and GNOME. Xubuntu 24.10 has arrived this Thursday, and its most important changes are precisely in the new versions of the desktops, with the bulk coming from Xfce 4.19. As explained in the notes from this release, is a preview of 4.20 which will arrive, if there are no surprises, this December.

The release notes don't provide much more information, but we do know that, like the other official flavors, they have updated the base, which includes software such as Python and systemd. What follows is the change list which they have introduced in Xubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole.

What's new in Xubuntu 24.10

  • Supported for 9 months, until July 2025.
  • Linux 6.11.
  • Xfce 4.19, GNOME 47 and MATE 1.26. Please note that Xfce 4.19 is a development series, so it is easy to experience crashes when using its components.
  • Qt 6.6.2.
  • What it shares with Plasma, like the Discover software store, is now at v6.1.5.
  • Applications updated to new versions, such as LibreOffice 24.8.1.2 and Firefox 130 which will be updated after installing the operating system.
  • APT 3.0, with new image.
  • Open SSL 3.3.
  • systemd v256.5.
  • Netplan v1.1.
  • OpenJDK 21 by default, but OpenJDK 23 available as an option.
  • .NET 9.
  • GCC 14.2.
  • binutils 2.43.1.
  • glubc 2.40.
  • Python 3.12.7.
  • LLVM 19.
  • Rust 1.80.
  • golang 1.23.

There are several known issues, but perhaps the most important one that needs to be known is one that causes the operating system to display a black screen or the Xubuntu logo instead of the reboot option when it finishes installing. If this is the case, pressing Enter will reboot and enter the already installed operating system.

Now available
